We’re huge fans of James Hammarhead’s creations. He chooses donor bikes with charm and ability—such as Triumph Bonnevilles and Urals—and injects a major dash of style and functionality. Grant Ray, then creative director of Hell For Leather (now RideApart), captured the spirit of these machines with a photo essay recording a day of hardcore offroad riding.
Hammarhead himself sums it up perfectly: “For me, this mixture of queasy empowerment is the primal state that motorcycles can induce, shattering the lethargy of an anxiety prone post-modern life. In fact, everything Hammarhead creates is an exploration of the uncomfortable, electric affirmation that happens when a motorcycle reminds us that we are alive.”
